"Playing and singing at the same time is something that's not natural: to play a contrapuntal bassline against the singing is much different to strumming along four in the bar, you know. So learning how to do that was important, because my mentors were Paul McCartney and Jack Bruce and Phil Lynott, who could do it. And I enjoy it. Anything I couldn't play and sing, I knew I could if I slowed everything down. My technique was to slow down gradually and then find the gaps, and then speed it up."
